Christian von Koenigsegg founded his hypercar company at 22 years old, reportedly inspired by a Norwegian animated film about building the perfect race car. Decades later, one of his cars broke an 80-year-old speed record.

Independent Engineering, Extreme Results

Few hypercar makers operate with this little corporate oversight — and it shows in just how far the engineering gets pushed. In 2017, the Agera RS averaged 277.9mph over two runs on a closed Nevada highway, breaking the previous production car record and, remarkably, an 80-year-old record for the fastest production car on a public road that had stood since the 1930s. That same car set four other world records on the same day, all independently verified, from a company that still develops its engines, transmissions, and carbon fibre bodywork largely in-house rather than relying on a parent group's parts bin.

That independence has let Koenigsegg pursue genuinely unconventional engineering, including its own camless "Freevalve" engine technology, developed without the constraints a larger manufacturer's existing platforms would impose. Below are the models we've covered so far.
