Desirable Land Rovers

The entire Land Rover concept began as a doodle in wet sand on a Welsh beach in 1947 — drawn by an engineer frustrated with his own war-surplus Jeep, and built from surplus aircraft aluminium because steel was rationed.

Genuine Off-Road Heritage, Reinvented

Few brands carry this much authentic expedition and military credibility into their current lineup. Rover's chief engineer Maurice Wilks had been using an army-surplus Willys Jeep on his Anglesey farm and found it wanting, and one summer day in 1947 he sketched his own alternative directly into the sand at Red Wharf Bay while his brother, Rover's managing director, looked on. The board approved the project within weeks. With steel tightly rationed in post-war Britain, the body panels were hand-formed instead from Birmabright, a surplus aircraft-grade aluminium-magnesium alloy — a materials shortage that accidentally created one of the most distinctive, corrosion-resistant design features in the brand's history.

From a sketch in the sand to a production vehicle unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show took less than a year, and that same rugged, purpose-first philosophy carries directly through to the reinvented current Defender. Below are the models we've covered so far.
