Across owner forums, a striking pattern repeats: a huge share of "rear suspension knock" complaints turn out not to be suspension wear at all once properly investigated. Genuinely common culprits include a loose rear brake caliper heat shield rattling against the disc, a broken piece of coil spring insulator or a small chunk of the spring itself knocking around in the lower spring seat, the plastic rear bumper mounting bracket fouling against the metal subframe at certain suspension travel points, and even entirely unrelated interior causes like a brake line clip that's lost its grip, or something as simple as a loose item rattling in the boot or spare wheel well. Owners have spent considerable time and money chasing what sounded exactly like a suspension knock before discovering the actual cause was something considerably cheaper and unrelated to genuine wear.

A genuinely sensible diagnostic order: before assuming bushings or shocks are worn, it's worth emptying the boot and spare wheel well completely and re-testing, checking the rear brake heat shields and caliper mounting for looseness, and visually inspecting the coil springs themselves for any visible cracking or a broken end — all genuinely common, cheap-to-fix causes that get mistaken for expensive suspension wear.

The Mk3 Focus rear suspension design changed from earlier generations, with most standard cars using a torsion beam rear axle (which has fewer separate serviceable arms) while performance ST/RS models use a more complex multi-link independent rear suspension with genuinely different components. Confirm which type your car has — visible by looking underneath the rear of the car — before assuming any part will fit.
