A genuinely distinctive, documented pattern worth knowing before assuming a reversing camera fault: some cars are built with the physical camera hardware and wiring genuinely present — including in one documented case the washer pipe for the camera lens connected and everything — but the camera was simply never activated or coded at the factory, meaning it's physically there but functionally inert. This is worth checking before paying for expensive diagnostics on a camera you'd otherwise assume has failed; activation on a genuinely-fitted-but-uncoded camera typically requires VAG-specific tooling (ODIS or equivalent) to add the module into the car's gateway list and complete a proper calibration, which most independent VAG specialists (not just main dealers) can do.

A genuinely important technical fact if you're considering an aftermarket reversing camera: VW's reverse light circuit uses a pulsed (rather than constant) 12V signal specifically to allow thinner wiring in the loom — this pulsing genuinely confuses most generic aftermarket cameras, which expect a steady voltage and simply won't display a picture correctly if wired directly to the reverse light feed. The standard, well-established workaround is a relay: the reverse light's pulsed signal triggers the relay coil, which then switches a genuinely steady 12V supply to the camera from a separate source. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons a DIY aftermarket camera install doesn't work properly.

If you're having a towbar fitted, it's worth knowing the trailer control module genuinely does more than provide power to the socket — it automatically disables the rear parking sensors and rear fog lights, and adjusts ABS/traction control logic, specifically when it detects a trailer plugged in. Never allow a fitter to simply splice the tow socket's lighting directly into the existing wiring rather than using a proper module — doing so bypasses this logic entirely and can cause both the car's own systems and the trailer's lights to behave unpredictably.

Modern rear bumpers routinely integrate parking sensors, reversing camera housings and sometimes exhaust trim finishers, which means replacing one after even minor kerb damage often involves more than a straightforward swap.
