Volkswagen Golf Spark Plugs: Intervals, Fitment & Warning Signs
On the Golf, a simple coil-swap test genuinely confirms whether a misfire is the plug, the coil, or something else entirely — plus a flashing light warning worth knowing.
A Genuinely Reliable Way to Diagnose a Misfire Before Replacing Anything
If you're chasing a misfire (fault codes P0300 for random/multiple cylinders, or P0301-P0304 for a specific cylinder), a genuinely reliable diagnostic technique before replacing anything: swap the ignition coil from the misfiring cylinder with one from a healthy cylinder, then check whether the misfire code follows the coil to its new position. If it does, the coil is confirmed faulty. If the misfire stays with the original cylinder, try the same test with the spark plug — swapping it to rule that out too. Only once both are ruled out should you look further afield, at carbon buildup on the intake valves (a well-known characteristic of direct-injection TSI engines, since fuel injected straight into the cylinder doesn't wash over and clean the valves the way port injection does) or a failing fuel injector.
It's worth knowing ignition coils on TSI engines don't have a fixed scheduled replacement interval the way plugs do, but many owners choose to replace them at the same time as the spark plugs (commonly every 40,000-60,000 miles) as cheap insurance, since a failed coil while driving can trigger an unexpected loss of power. If one coil has failed, replacing all of them together is generally the sensible approach rather than waiting for each to fail in turn.
A Cheap Part That Causes Expensive-Feeling Problems
Worn spark plugs rarely announce themselves clearly — a slightly rougher idle, a bit less punch off the line — symptoms easy to blame on almost anything else in the engine bay. The part itself costs very little, which makes it an easy one to overlook for far longer than it should be.
OEM Part Numbers
| 1.5 TSI petrol (set of 4), 2020 onwards | VW OEM: 05E-905-602 (superseded to 05E-905-602-B) |
|---|---|
| Other engines (1.0 TSI, 2.0 TSI, GTI, R) | Different reference — confirm via VIN |
If a supplier lists the older 05E-905-602 reference, check whether it's been superseded by 05E-905-602-B before assuming it's out of stock or discontinued — this is a common point of confusion when searching for genuine parts online.
What They Do
Spark plugs ignite the compressed fuel-air mixture inside each cylinder, and their condition directly affects combustion efficiency, fuel economy and smooth running. Petrol engines rely entirely on them; diesel engines don't use spark plugs at all, relying on compression instead.
Generations, Engines & Spark Plug Count
| Diesel variants (all TDI derivatives) | Not applicable — diesel engines use compression ignition and have no spark plugs at all |
|---|---|
| Petrol four-cylinder (standard TSI, GTI) | 4 spark plugs — one per cylinder, including the GTI, which uses a turbocharged four-cylinder rather than a six |
| R32 (Mk4 and Mk5 only) | Genuinely 6 spark plugs — the R32 uses VW's distinctive VR6 engine, a narrow-angle six-cylinder design (10.5-15 degrees between banks) specifically engineered to fit into an engine bay sized for a four-cylinder unit; this is a completely different engine architecture from the standard GTI's four-cylinder, not a bored-out version of it |
| Golf R (all generations) | 4 spark plugs — despite the "R" badge shared with the older R32, the modern Golf R reverted to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, genuinely different from the R32's VR6 |
