One long-term Golf GTD owner reported being on their third set of rear discs and pads by 65,000 miles for exactly this reason, describing the standard VW discs as rotting "at the first sign of moisture" unless driven hard and often. Multiple owners who've switched to reputable aftermarket brands (Pagid and Napa Proformer both specifically mentioned) report the corrosion problem disappearing entirely, suggesting this is genuinely more about VW's chosen disc material and coating than an inevitable characteristic of the car itself.

GTI and Golf R models use a substantially larger, high-performance braking package than standard TSI versions, so engine and trim matter as much as generation when sourcing the correct rotor for this car.
