If a high-pressure pump has failed on a diesel, insisting on a proper check of the injectors and fuel lines for metal contamination — rather than simply fitting a new pump and hoping for the best — is a genuinely worthwhile precaution, even though it adds to the initial cost.

Before paying for a replacement pump on any engine: never replace a high-pressure fuel pump based on symptoms alone — always confirm via fault codes and live fuel pressure data first (commonly P0087, P2293, P2294, or similar), since several other issues (weak lift pump, clogged filter, failing pressure sensor) can produce very similar symptoms without the expensive pump actually being at fault.
