Citroen C4 Alternator: Specs, Fitment & Common Faults

On the C4, a genuinely important distinction on newer "smart" alternators — plus why "that's just how it sounds" isn't a real explanation for a changing whine.

Generation covered: this guide is for the current C4 (launched 2021, facelifted 2024), with particular focus on 2021–2023 registered examples now old enough for parts to be a common search. Check your logbook or VIN if you're unsure which generation you have.

A Genuinely Important Technical Distinction on Newer Alternators

If your car is a newer model, it's worth knowing the alternator itself works differently from older versions: rather than charging at a broadly fixed voltage, newer "smart" alternators are controlled directly by the engine ECU via a thin PWM (pulse-width modulation) signal wire, adjusting output based on what the car actually needs at any moment. This means older diagnostic methods, like the classic bulb test some specialists still suggest, genuinely don't apply the same way — testing these properly requires checking the ECU's commanded output against what the alternator is actually delivering.

Worth being sceptical of a dismissive explanation: one documented owner was told during a major service that a persistent whine — described as sounding like a large fan, getting louder under acceleration and even present at idle when revving in neutral — was simply "a common issue and it's just how the car sounds." This kind of description genuinely matches classic bearing wear symptoms rather than a normal characteristic, and it's worth getting a second opinion rather than accepting a vague "that's just how they sound" explanation for a noise that's clearly changing with engine speed.

A genuinely useful, free test worth trying first: with the drive belt removed, spin the alternator pulley and any other free pulleys by hand — genuine roughness, dryness, or grinding as you rotate them indicates a worn bearing specifically, distinguishing this from an alternator that's electrically fine but has a failing bearing making the same kind of noise.

Often Blamed on the Battery Instead

A weak battery and a failing alternator produce almost identical symptoms at first — dim lights, slow starts, a car that won't hold charge — which is exactly why so many people replace the battery, only to be back at the garage a few weeks later with the real culprit untouched.

Before you buy: alternator output rating varies by engine size and trim, particularly on cars with more onboard electronics. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

Genuinely distinctive to know: this alternator reference is shared not just across the wider Peugeot/Citroen range but also, from the era PSA supplied engines to BMW, the Mini Cooper S — an unexpected cross-manufacturer link worth knowing if you're cross-shopping parts availability.
150 Amp, Valeo, shared across 1.6-litre petrol/HDi diesel rangeGenuine cross-reference: 9666997980 (also referenced as FG15T072, TG15T072) — fits Peugeot 208/308/3008/5008, Citroen C3/C4, and Mini Cooper S of the relevant era

Alternator specification on petrol and mild-hybrid versions varies by engine output and electrical equipment level — confirm your exact powertrain before ordering.

What It Does

The alternator generates electricity while the engine runs, charging the battery and powering the car's electrical systems directly. A healthy alternator means the battery is mostly there for starting the engine and covering brief demand spikes — not for actually running the car's electronics on its own.
