Desirable AC Cars

Carroll Shelby asked Chevrolet to help build a Corvette rival first. They said no — so Ford supplied the V8 instead, and a British sports car maker built the result.

One Car, Enormous Legacy

Few small manufacturers have built a single model with this much lasting cultural weight. When American racer Carroll Shelby wanted to combine a lightweight European chassis with big American horsepower, he approached Chevrolet first, hoping to use small-block V8 engines — but General Motors declined, unwilling to help create a rival to its own Corvette. Ford stepped in instead, supplying a pair of new lightweight V8s, and AC Cars agreed to ship a modified Ace chassis to Shelby's California workshop in 1961. The resulting car, reportedly named after appearing to Shelby in a dream, became the AC Cobra — a genuinely unlikely Anglo-American partnership that outran nearly everything else on the road.

That single model has come to define the entire marque in most people's minds, even as AC's own Ace provided the chassis, handling, and craftsmanship that made the whole thing possible in the first place. Below is the model we've covered so far.
