The 996: A Risky Reinvention That Saved the Badge
Every 911 built since 1998 owes its existence to a gamble few enthusiasts welcomed at the time. Porsche was in genuine financial trouble in the mid-1990s, and the air-cooled flat-six had reached the end of what it could achieve within tightening emissions and noise rules. The 996 answered with a water-cooled engine, a shared platform with the cheaper Boxster, and "fried egg" headlights that split opinion for years afterward. It worked commercially — the 996 sold in far greater numbers than any 911 before it — even as purists mourned the air-cooled sound. Every generation since, the 997 through today's 992, has been a refinement of that same water-cooled architecture rather than another ground-up rethink, which is exactly why this page treats 996 as the true starting point of the modern car.
Which 911 Should You Buy? Carrera, GTS, Turbo and GT3 Explained
The badge on the back does most of the work in a 911 showroom, and it's worth understanding what each one actually buys you. Carrera and Carrera S sit at the accessible end — genuinely usable every day, with enough performance to embarrass most other cars on the road. Move up to a GTS and you get a meaningfully firmer, more focused chassis without tipping into track-day-only territory. The Turbo and Turbo S add all-wheel drive and genuinely supercar-baiting acceleration, at the cost of some of the steering feel purists chase. At the top sits the GT3 and GT3 RS: naturally aspirated, motorsport-derived, and — on the earlier water-cooled cars especially — mechanically distinct from the rest of the range in a way that matters enormously for reliability, covered next.
Common Problems: The IMS Bearing and What It Means for Buyers
Search "Porsche 911 reliability" for long enough and you'll run into the intermediate shaft bearing, or IMS bearing — a genuinely well-documented weak point in the M96 and M97 engines fitted to 996 and early 997 Carreras built through 2008. The bearing can fail with little warning, and when it does, the resulting engine damage is usually terminal rather than a simple repair. Specialists estimate somewhere between 2% and 10% of affected engines suffer a failure, and a proper pre-purchase inspection — including a borescope check and oil analysis — is genuinely the difference between a great buy and an expensive mistake on any 996 or 997.1 Carrera. There's a widely known way around it entirely, though: Porsche's own GT3 and Turbo models of the same era used the completely different Mezger engine, a motorsport-proven design with no IMS bearing at all. Porsche redesigned the standard engine from the ground up for the 997.2 in 2009, eliminating the IMS bearing for good — which is why many specialists point to the 997.2 as the real sweet spot for anyone who wants classic 911 character with modern-Porsche peace of mind. The 991 and 992 that followed have proven strong and reliable in normal use, with only minor electronic niggles reported rather than anything structural.
How Much Does a Porsche 911 Cost in 2026?
Because the 911 has stayed in continuous production since 1963, "how much is a 911" depends enormously on which one you mean. A 996 Carrera with an IMS-related question mark can be found for a genuinely modest sum today, while a well-sorted 997.2 — the reliability sweet spot above — commands a real premium over an equivalent 996 for exactly that reason. Move into the current 992 range and pricing starts from around £99,800 for a base Carrera, climbing sharply through GTS, Turbo S and GT3 RS specification. As with most enduring performance icons, manual-gearbox cars and limited-run specials have shown a genuine tendency to hold — or even exceed — their original list price on the used market, while more common automatic-equipped Carreras depreciate in a far more ordinary, predictable way.
