First introduced in 1963, the model has gone through eight generations while keeping its distinctive rear-engine layout — an arrangement most rivals abandoned decades ago for good engineering reasons, and one Porsche has spent sixty years refining rather than walking away from. The current generation, internally known as the 992, carries that same basic recipe into its most sophisticated form yet.
Engineering & Range
The current lineup spans everything from a comfortable, everyday-usable Carrera to the track-focused GT3 RS, with a flagship Turbo S sitting at the performance summit. Climate control sophistication and daily usability have improved dramatically generation over generation, without sacrificing the driver engagement the badge is built on.
Why It Still Matters
Few performance cars manage to be genuinely track-capable and genuinely comfortable for a daily commute at the same time, and this remains the benchmark most rivals are still measured against on exactly that combination. Its electric Taycan sibling has taken over flagship EV duties within the range, but the 911 itself has stayed resolutely combustion-powered, at least so far.
Value Today
As a current-production model spanning a wide range of trims and special editions, values track new pricing closely, though certain limited-run variants and manual-gearbox specifications have shown a tendency to hold or even exceed their original list price on the used market.
