When it starts to fail, it produces a distinctive chattering or rattling noise specifically at idle, and this is frequently mistaken for a failing alternator or a worn belt when the alternator itself is usually still perfectly healthy.

A genuine, practical test worth doing before replacing anything: with the drive belt removed, try turning the pulley by hand in both directions — it should spin freely in one direction and lock solid in the other, thanks to the internal one-way clutch. If it doesn't behave this way (spins freely both ways, or is stiff in both directions), that confirms the decoupler pulley has failed rather than the alternator itself.
