A genuine, well-documented source of confusion worth knowing about before assuming a fault: on many VW models, the front fog lights are wired to double as a "cornering light" — automatically illuminating on one side when the steering wheel is turned or an indicator is active, even without the fog light switch being on. This is a genuine, intentional VW feature rather than a malfunction, though many owners find it confusing and some report other road users flagging it as "you've got a fog light out" when it's actually working exactly as designed. If you'd genuinely prefer this disabled, it can be turned off via long coding with VCDS or a similar tool (typically by disabling the relevant "cornering light" function bits for each side individually), though this is worth doing carefully given how coding changes on these systems can interact with other lighting functions.

A genuinely useful fix if fog lights still won't work after repairing an obvious fault: a fixed blown fuse or repaired wiring fault doesn't always clear the problem on its own — a stuck or stored fault code in the Body Control Module can continue preventing the lights from operating even once the underlying issue is resolved. Disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds, or clearing fault codes with a VCDS or similar diagnostic tool, has resolved this residual issue for a genuine number of owners after the original fault was already fixed.

Not every Mk8 trim comes with fog lights — some use a styled blanking cover in the same location instead, and GTI/R-Line/Golf R versions use a different bumper design with integrated fog light housings entirely. Confirm your exact trim before assuming this part applies to your car.
