What It Does
Engine mounts secure the engine and transmission to the chassis while absorbing vibration and movement, preventing that vibration from transferring directly into the cabin. Most versions of the 2 Series use several mounts working together — typically at least one on each side of the engine plus a torque mount — and a single failed mount can throw off the whole assembly's balance.

A Genuinely Useful Piece of Context Worth Knowing About Engine Mount Wear — BMW 2 Series Engine Mount
If engine mounts on related BMW models seem to need replacing more often than expected, this is genuinely worth knowing: owners have documented these mounts needing replacement as often as every 30,000 to 40,000 miles in some cases, a characteristic of this design rather than a fault unique to your car.
It's also genuinely worth knowing that the automatic stop-start system fitted to many of these cars is genuinely hard on engine mounts, causing them to collapse over time faster than on cars without this system.
