BMW 3 Series Alternator: Specs, Fitment & Common Faults

On the 3 Series, a leaking oil filter housing gasket is genuinely the primary cause of alternator failure on this engine — worth fixing before replacing the alternator, or the new one will likely fail the same way.

Generation covered: this guide is for the seventh-generation 3 Series (G20 platform, 2019–present), with particular focus on 2019–2023 registered examples now old enough for parts to be a common search. The previous F30 generation (2012–2019) uses different part numbers throughout — check your logbook or VIN if you're unsure which generation you have.

Often Blamed on the Battery Instead

On the BMW 3 Series, a failing alternator and a simply weak battery share almost the same symptom set at first: dim lights, sluggish starts, charge that won't hold. Mixing the two up is common, which is why plenty of people replace the battery only to find themselves back at the garage shortly after.

Before you buy: alternator output rating varies by engine size and trim, particularly on cars with more onboard electronics. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

OEM Part Number: 12318578608 (genuine alternator — confirm via VIN) — aftermarket alternators Bosch 1 986 A01 462 / Valeo 443451

Accuracy note: Covers the BMW 3 Series (G20 2019 on) as listed in the UK aftermarket catalogues. Alternators are sold by output (amps), pulley type and plug, and the same model usually has two or three units depending on engine, start-stop and the electrical load of the trim — a 120 A unit on a car built for 150 A will undercharge, and a rigid pulley on a car designed for a freewheel clutch pulley will shred belts. The references below are UK aftermarket catalogue listings for this generation, labelled by brand; many are remanufactured exchange units that carry a core charge until the old alternator is returned. Genuine numbers are shown only where a listing quotes one. Check the amp rating, pulley and plug stamped on the old unit, or confirm via VIN, before ordering.
Alternators (aftermarket)Bosch 1 986 A01 462 (250 A, multi-rib pulley, 6 ribs, 49 mm, new, plug ID 181, excludes vacuum pump); Valeo 443451 (250 A, V-ribbed pulley, 6 ribs, 49 mm, new, B+ and LIN2 clamp, three-point mounting); Valeo 444788 (180 A, V-ribbed pulley, 6 ribs, 49 mm, remanufactured exchange, core charge £50.24); Hella 8EL 015 659-181 (250 A, 6 ribs, 49 mm, new, four mounting bores, two-pin plug); AS-PL A0948S (180 A, 6 ribs, 49 mm, new, plug PL_2306); AS-PL A01016S (180 A, 6 ribs, 49.2 mm, new, plug PL_2306); AS-PL A0976S (250 A, 6 ribs, 49.5 mm, new, plug PL_2306); AS-PL A6980S (180 A, 6 ribs, 49 mm, new, plug PL_2818)
Outputs & variantsTwo main 12 V outputs are listed, both on a 49 mm six-rib pulley: 180 A for the 318i, 320i and 318d/320d four-cylinders, and 250 A (Bosch 1 986 A01 462, Valeo 443451, Hella 8EL 015 659-181, AS-PL A0976S and A01454S) for the 330i, 330d, M340i and plug-in hybrid 330e. A 48 V 210 A belt starter-generator (AS-PL A01132, BV PSH 217.501.210.280) is listed separately for the mild-hybrid 320d and 330d from 2020. A 150 A Walker WAL02392 also appears for the lowest-output cars.
Genuine (OE) numbers quoted0127823056 (AS-PL A01132, 48 V), 104211-9461 (AS-PL A6980S), 0125815004 (AS-PL A01454S), 0125815003 (AS-PL A0976S), 0125814003 (AS-PL A01016S), 0125812025 (AS-PL A0948S).
Fitment notesBosch (SEG) and Denso both supplied alternators to this generation and they have different plugs and mounting, so the old unit's number must be checked; the 48 V starter-generator on mild-hybrid cars is a different part entirely and cannot be replaced with a 12 V alternator. Remanufactured Valeo and Walker units carry a £50.24 core charge refunded on return of the old alternator.

Alternator output and specification vary between the four-cylinder B46/B48 and six-cylinder B58 engines given their different electrical demands — confirm your exact engine before ordering, and note that the 330e plug-in hybrid uses a different charging architecture entirely given its high-voltage hybrid system.

BMW 3 Series Alternator: What It Does

The BMW 3 Series's electrical systems and battery charging both depend on the alternator generating electricity whenever the engine runs. If it's healthy, the battery's job shrinks down to starting the engine and handling brief surges in demand, not powering everything else on its own.

A Genuinely Important, BMW-Specific Finding Worth Knowing — BMW 3 Series Alternator

If this alternator has failed, this is genuinely worth checking before fitting a replacement: a leaking oil filter housing gasket is described as the primary cause of alternator failure on this specific engine, since leaking oil can drip directly onto the alternator and cook its internal components. It's genuinely critical to inspect for and fix this specific leak before replacing the alternator, since fitting a new unit without addressing an underlying oil leak will likely see the replacement fail the same way.

A genuinely important safety warning worth knowing: if the alternator has genuinely failed, the car will be running purely on remaining battery charge, and it can stall completely without warning once that charge is depleted, creating a real safety risk. It's genuinely worth having this checked and addressed promptly rather than continuing to drive.

It's also genuinely worth knowing that when replacing the alternator, it's wise to also change the serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pulley at the same time, particularly if they're oil-soaked or high-mileage.
