Bugatti Veyron: A Napkin Sketch on a Bullet Train That Rewrote the Rulebook

The idea for the car that would become the first production model to break both 1,000 horsepower and 250mph reportedly began as a doodle on an envelope, sketched by a Volkswagen Group chairman riding a Japanese bullet train in 1997.

An Engineering Target That Sounded Genuinely Impossible

Setting out to build a car with over 1,000 horsepower, a 250mph top speed, and a sub-three-second 0-62mph time was audacious enough on its own in the late 1990s. Reviewers keep noting the truly remarkable part wasn't just hitting those numbers — it was making the result comfortable enough to drive to the opera afterward.

History & Development

Ferdinand Piëch, chairman of the Volkswagen Group, sketched his original concept for an 18-cylinder engine on a 1997 train journey between Tokyo and Nagoya, working through the idea with VW's head of powertrain development, Karl-Heinz Neumann. Volkswagen acquired the rights to the dormant Bugatti name in 1998, and a rapid succession of concept cars — the EB118, EB218, and Chiron 18/3 — refined the design through 1999 before the 18-cylinder concept was abandoned in favour of a more compact quad-turbo W16, essentially two narrow-angle V8 engines joined together. Piëch announced the finalised targets at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show: 1,001PS, a sub-three-second 0-62mph sprint, and a top speed exceeding 400km/h. Development proved genuinely difficult, delaying production from an initial 2003 target to an eventual 2005 launch, with engineers wrestling with cooling, braking and steering challenges throughout.

Design & Engineering

The Veyron's 8.0-litre W16 engine, fed by four turbochargers, produced 1,001PS (987bhp) and 1,250Nm of torque, enough for a 2.5-second 0-60mph time and a 253mph top speed — figures that made it both the first production car to exceed 1,000PS and the first to break 250mph. Ten radiators managed the immense heat generated, while bespoke Michelin PAX tyres, developed specifically to survive sustained running at over 250mph, needed replacing after just 15 minutes of full-speed driving at a cost of around $42,000 a set. A carbon-fibre monocoque chassis — a first for a production vehicle — delivered torsional rigidity that remained unmatched for years afterward, while a Haldex all-wheel-drive system and a Ricardo-developed seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox translated the engine's enormous output into genuinely usable, everyday performance.

Cultural Significance

McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray, initially dismissive, calling the project "the most pointless exercise on the planet" before driving one, came away calling it "a huge achievement" and praised its styling as timeless enough to become a future classic. The Veyron went on to win Top Gear's Car of the Decade for the 2000s and set a genuine production car speed record of 267.8mph in its Super Sport form in 2010, a mark that stood until Bugatti's own Chiron eventually surpassed it.

Value Today

Just 450 examples were built across the model's 2005-2015 production run, spanning the original 16.4 coupe, targa-roofed Grand Sport, and range of extreme special editions like the Pur Sang and Sang Noir. Original list prices around £925,000 have been comfortably surpassed at auction for well-documented, low-mileage examples, with the model's status as a genuine turn-of-the-millennium engineering landmark supporting strong, stable values.
