Land Rover Discovery Spark Plugs: Intervals, Fitment & Warning Signs

A genuinely honest finding: the official 72,000-mile platinum plug service interval is considered by experienced mechanics to be genuinely too long, since the widened gap can burn out leads and coils — worth fitting ordinary plugs more frequently instead.

Land Rover Discovery Spark Plugs: OEM Part Number

Accuracy note: we weren't able to verify a confident Land Rover Discovery spark plugs part number at the time of writing. Please confirm the correct part via a Land Rover dealer or parts specialist using your VIN.

Land Rover Discovery Spark Plugs: A Cheap Part That Causes Expensive-Feeling Problems

On the Land Rover Discovery, there's rarely a clear signal when spark plugs wear out — just a rougher idle, marginally less pep off the line — vague enough to get pinned on other engine issues. Since the part costs so little, it's also one of the easiest things to keep putting off.

Before you buy: plug type and gap specification vary by engine size and generation. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

Land Rover Discovery Spark Plugs: What They Do

On the Land Rover Discovery, combustion efficiency, fuel economy and smooth running all trace back to spark plug condition, since these are what ignite the compressed fuel-air mixture in each cylinder. Petrol engines depend on them entirely — diesels skip spark plugs altogether, igniting fuel through compression instead.

Land Rover Discovery Spark Plugs: Generations, Engines & Spark Plug Count

Diesel variants (SDV6, SD4, D300 and similar)Not applicable — diesel engines use compression ignition and have no spark plugs at all
Petrol four-cylinder (Si4 Ingenium, later petrol variants)4 spark plugs — one per cylinder
Petrol six-cylinder (Si6 Ingenium, or earlier supercharged V6)6 spark plugs — a genuinely different engine family from the four-cylinder units
Older/earlier generation V8 petrol variants (where fitted)8 spark plugs — confirm your exact engine before ordering, since older Discovery generations offered V8 petrol options genuinely distinct from the current four/six-cylinder Ingenium range

A Genuinely Honest, Real Finding Worth Knowing About the Service Interval — Land Rover Discovery Spark Plugs

If a misfire develops on a high-mileage car running platinum spark plugs, this is genuinely worth knowing: the official service interval for these plugs, often around 72,000 miles, has been described by experienced independent mechanics as genuinely too long in practice. By this mileage, the plug gap can wear so wide that it requires a much higher voltage to fire a spark across it, and under load this spark can jump elsewhere instead, causing a misfire and confused fuel trims — this in turn can burn out the leads and the top of the coil pack over time. One documented workaround was fitting ordinary, non-platinum plugs with a smaller gap and simply replacing them more frequently, around every 15,000 to 20,000 miles, rather than pushing platinum plugs to their full official interval.

A genuinely useful diagnostic technique worth trying: physically swapping a suspect coil with a known-good one and seeing whether the misfire follows it to its new position is a direct way to confirm whether the coil itself is genuinely at fault.

It's also genuinely worth knowing that it's surprisingly easy to mix up wires between coils during a DIY job, and separately easy to damage a wire inside its connector while removing it — a wire corrected to the right position after being disturbed may have already been damaged, sometimes only causing a misfire to develop months later.
