Two Fundamentally Different Designs, and Why It Matters

Most front-wheel-drive family cars use one of two rear suspension designs, and knowing which your car has explains a lot about how it rides and what actually needs replacing when something wears. A torsion beam (also called a twist beam) is a single, large H- or U-shaped stamped steel section — the two rear wheels are connected by one solid beam that twists slightly as each wheel moves independently, meaning the wheels aren't fully independent of each other the way a more sophisticated system allows. It mounts to the body through just two rubber bushings per side, which keeps the design simple, light, and cheap to produce, but concentrates all the wear onto those two bushings and the shock absorbers — genuinely good news for reliability, since there are simply fewer parts to fail, but a firmer, less adjustable ride is the trade-off. A multi-link setup uses several separate arms per wheel — often four or more — each on its own bushing or ball joint, allowing engineers to tune the wheel's alignment behaviour precisely through its range of travel. This gives genuinely better ride quality and handling, particularly through corners, but with meaningfully more parts that can individually wear out over time.

How to Tell Which One Your Car Has

The simplest way is visual: look underneath the rear bumper — a single, thick, solid beam running the full width of the car, with the shock absorber and spring sitting on top of it, is a torsion beam; if there's no single connecting bar and instead you see several separate arms and linkages, it's multi-link. On many VW Group cars specifically, there's an even more precise method: look for the vehicle's PR-code sticker (usually in the service manual or spare wheel well) — code 0N1 confirms a standard torsion beam rear axle, while 0N4 confirms multi-link. It's also worth knowing that four-wheel-drive versions of a given car (Quattro, 4Motion, 4Drive, and similar systems) almost always require multi-link regardless of what the front-wheel-drive version of the same car uses, since a torsion beam simply doesn't leave room for a rear differential and driveshaft to pass through. Estate versions of a nameplate sometimes use multi-link even when the hatchback version of the same car uses a torsion beam, for the same packaging reason.

What Actually Wears, and the Warning Signs

On a torsion beam, wear concentrates almost entirely in the two mounting bushings and the shock absorbers — bushings harden, crack, and eventually let the beam move more than designed, which shows up as vague handling, a clunk over bumps, and uneven rear tyre wear, since the alignment can no longer be reliably maintained once the bushings are compromised. On a multi-link setup, the same fundamental symptoms apply but the cause can be any one of several bushings or ball joints across the multiple arms, making diagnosis slightly less straightforward — a specialist will typically need to check each link individually for play. On both types, shock absorbers themselves fail the same way any shock does: developing oil leaks, losing damping efficiency, and eventually failing to control body movement properly, at which point the car feels bouncier and takes longer to settle after a bump. Springs can also sag with age, gradually lowering rear ride height even without a specific dramatic failure.

What This Means for Modification and Adjustability

If you're hoping to adjust rear camber or toe for tuning purposes, a torsion beam offers essentially no adjustment — the design resists it by nature, and aftermarket options are limited to springs, shocks, and bushings rather than genuine geometry changes. A multi-link setup, by contrast, allows meaningfully more adjustability since each link can potentially be swapped for an adjustable aftermarket version. This isn't relevant to most owners simply replacing worn parts, but it's worth knowing if you're comparing two similar cars and wondering why one has a reputation for sharper handling — the rear suspension design is very often the answer.
