What It Does

Engine mounts secure the engine and transmission to the chassis while absorbing vibration and movement, preventing that vibration from transferring directly into the cabin. Most versions of the Forester use several mounts working together — typically at least one on each side of the engine plus a torque mount — and a single failed mount can throw off the whole assembly's balance.

If you suspect the transmission mount, particularly on CVT-equipped models, this is genuinely worth checking yourself: looking at the crossmember where the mount attaches reveals three nuts in the middle, with the centre one having a rubber washer beneath it. If that washer isn't actually touching the crossmember anymore, this is a genuine, visual sign the mount has worn out and compressed, worth checking before committing to a full mount replacement based on symptoms alone.

A genuinely useful diagnostic technique worth trying: shifting into neutral while a clunk or vibration is present and seeing whether it disappears can help distinguish between a genuine mount issue and a fault in the rotating parts of the drivetrain itself. If the noise or vibration disappears in neutral, since there's no longer drivetrain torque being transmitted through the mounts, this points toward the mounts themselves; if it persists even in neutral, the cause more likely lies in the transmission, differentials, or axles rather than the mounts.

It's also genuinely worth knowing a practical, combined-job tip: there's a third mount type worth inspecting alongside the more commonly discussed engine and transmission mounts, sometimes called the pitch mount, running from the firewall to the top of the engine and transmission mating area — worth checking this specifically for cracks while you already have access. It's also worth knowing that reaching the engine mount securing nuts commonly requires removing the anti-roll bar first, so it's worth considering replacing the anti-roll bar links at the same time if they're due, since they typically need periodic replacement anyway and you'll already have the access needed.
