Volvo XC60 Spark Plugs: Intervals, Fitment & Warning Signs

A genuinely easily-made, money-saving mistake: swapped coil connectors after a plug change caused severe misfiring that persisted even after buying an entirely new set of coils — only fixed by reconnecting the originals correctly.

A Cheap Part That Causes Expensive-Feeling Problems

Worn spark plugs rarely announce themselves clearly — a slightly rougher idle, a bit less punch off the line — symptoms easy to blame on almost anything else in the engine bay. The part itself costs very little, which makes it an easy one to overlook for far longer than it should be.

Before you buy: plug type and gap specification vary by engine size and generation. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

What They Do

Spark plugs ignite the compressed fuel-air mixture inside each cylinder, and their condition directly affects combustion efficiency, fuel economy and smooth running. Petrol engines rely entirely on them; diesel engines don't use spark plugs at all, relying on compression instead.

Generations, Engines & Spark Plug Count

Diesel variants (D3, D4, D5 and similar)Not applicable — diesel engines use compression ignition and have no spark plugs at all
Pre-2017, petrol six-cylinder (3.2, T6 turbo)6 spark plugs — earlier XC60 generations used Volvo's inline-six petrol engine, genuinely different from the four-cylinder units used from 2017 onward
2015-2016, petrol five-cylinder (T5)Genuinely 5 spark plugs — Volvo briefly reintroduced a turbocharged inline-five during this narrow window before switching the whole range to four-cylinder engines the following year
2017-present, all petrol (T4, T5, T6, T8 plug-in hybrid)4 spark plugs — the current Drive-E engine family is four-cylinder across every trim and power output badge

A Genuinely Easily-Made, Money-Saving Mistake Worth Knowing About — Volvo XC60 Spark Plugs

If a misfire appears specifically after replacing your own spark plugs, this is genuinely worth checking before assuming the coils themselves have failed: one documented case saw two adjacent coil connectors swapped when reconnecting them after a plug change, causing severe misfiring, multiple fault codes, and a car that was barely drivable. The owner initially assumed the coils themselves were faulty and bought and fitted an entirely new set — which didn't fix the problem at all. Only after going back and correctly matching each connector to its proper cylinder did the car run fine again. It's genuinely worth double-checking your coil connectors are reconnected to the correct cylinder before spending money on new coils if a misfire appears right after a DIY plug change.

A genuinely alarming, real finding worth knowing about neglected plugs: a worn spark plug makes its corresponding ignition coil work harder to maintain a strong spark, and documented cases describe this eventually causing a coil pack's wiring loom to become so damaged it effectively fused and melted on one specific cylinder, with the wiring beneath splitting badly, particularly where it curves. It's genuinely worth keeping up with the recommended plug replacement interval rather than letting worn plugs place ongoing extra strain on the coils.

It's also genuinely worth knowing a useful diagnostic technique: swapping the coil from a misfiring cylinder over to a different cylinder, clearing the fault codes, and then driving the car again can help confirm the cause — if the misfire code follows the coil to its new cylinder, the coil itself is genuinely at fault; if the original cylinder continues misfiring despite the coil swap, the cause lies elsewhere.
