The Part That Fails Quietly Until It Doesn't

Degradation here is usually gradual — a slightly dimmer beam, a faint flicker on start-up — right up until the moment it isn't gradual anymore and you're left with one working light on a dark road. Catching the early signs saves a roadside scramble later.

Before you buy: headlight specifications differ significantly between Mk7, Mk8 and Mk8.5 generations of the Golf, and matrix LED units in particular are not interchangeable across model years without matching software. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

Volkswagen Golf Headlights: OEM Part Number

Genuinely worth knowing: adaptive or matrix LED headlights (badged IQ.Light on the Golf) are significantly more expensive to replace than standard LED units and often can't be sourced secondhand as easily — these are genuinely different, non-interchangeable assemblies. Confirm which your car has via the spec sheet or by looking at the unit itself before ordering.

IQ.Light matrix LED headlights, where fitted, are a significantly more expensive and technically complex part than the standard LED units, with individually controllable LED segments for adaptive high-beam. Confirm which headlight type your car has (check your original build sheet or ask a VW dealer using your VIN) before pricing up a replacement.

Volkswagen Golf Headlights: What They Do

Later generations of this model use full-matrix LED headlights that individually control dozens of LED segments to shape the beam around oncoming traffic automatically. It's a genuinely clever system, but one with more that can go wrong than a simple halogen bulb.
