Disconnecting the connector and reconnecting it firmly is often enough to clean the pins through simple contact friction and restore a reliable connection, resolving the fault entirely without needing any parts replaced.

A genuinely useful, real cost-saving tip if you're fitting a towbar: a fixed swan-neck towbar can genuinely be fitted without removing the rear bumper at all on some models — one documented owner fitted their own towbar this way for around €112, considerably cheaper than the detachable towbar option, which typically carries a premium of £100 or more. If budget is the deciding factor, it's worth asking specifically whether bumper removal is genuinely required for your specific model.

It's also worth knowing that the trailer control module does more than provide power to the socket — it interfaces with the car's stability system to disable rear parking sensors and apply a specific towing driving programme when a trailer is detected. This is a genuine reason to insist on a proper wiring kit rather than a basic splice.
