Citroen C4 Rear Bumper: Fitment, Sensors & Common Damage

On the C4, a genuinely simple, free camera fix: oxidised connector pins, resolved just by disconnecting and reconnecting — plus a real cost-saving towbar tip.

Generation covered: this guide is for the current C4 (launched 2021, facelifted 2024), with particular focus on 2021–2023 registered examples now old enough for parts to be a common search. Check your logbook or VIN if you're unsure which generation you have.

A Genuinely Simple, Free Fix Worth Trying: Oxidised Connector Pins

If your reversing camera works intermittently or shows no picture at all, this is genuinely worth trying before assuming a wiring or camera fault: the connector behind the camera can develop a thin layer of oxidisation on its pins simply from ordinary ambient moisture over time. Disconnecting the connector and reconnecting it firmly is often enough to clean the pins through simple contact friction and restore a reliable connection, resolving the fault entirely without needing any parts replaced.

A genuinely useful, real cost-saving tip if you're fitting a towbar: a fixed swan-neck towbar can genuinely be fitted without removing the rear bumper at all on some models — one documented owner fitted their own towbar this way for around €112, considerably cheaper than the detachable towbar option, which typically carries a premium of £100 or more. If budget is the deciding factor, it's worth asking specifically whether bumper removal is genuinely required for your specific model.

It's also worth knowing that the trailer control module does more than provide power to the socket — it interfaces with the car's stability system to disable rear parking sensors and apply a specific towing driving programme when a trailer is detected. This is a genuine reason to insist on a proper wiring kit rather than a basic splice.

More Than Just a Plastic Panel

Modern rear bumpers routinely integrate parking sensors, reversing camera housings and sometimes exhaust trim finishers, which means replacing one after even minor kerb damage often involves more than a straightforward swap.

Before you buy: bumper specification varies significantly by trim, particularly around parking sensor cutouts and camera housings. Always confirm against your VIN before ordering.

OEM Part Numbers

Accuracy note: we weren't able to verify a confident single rear bumper number for the current generation at the time of writing. Please confirm the correct part via a Citroen dealer or parts specialist using your VIN.

As with the front bumper, expect the rear cover to vary by parking sensor equipment and the 2024 facelift — a bumper with the wrong sensor cutouts pre-moulded isn't a simple swap even if it fits physically.

What It Does

Beyond absorbing minor impacts, the rear bumper on higher trims of the C4 often houses parking sensors, a reversing camera, and sometimes integrated exhaust finishers. A bumper that looks compatible can still be missing the correct cutouts or wiring provisions for your specific trim's equipment.
