If Your C-Max Has Adaptive Cruise, the Grille Does More Than Look Good

If your car is fitted with adaptive cruise control, this is genuinely useful to know before assuming a fault: the radar sensor that makes the system work sits directly behind the grille or front badge, and it's surprisingly vulnerable to something as simple as dirt, road grime, dead insects, or a build-up of ice and snow blocking its field of view. Ford's own guidance confirms a "blocked sensor" warning can appear even without a genuine obstruction, and it's worth trying a simple clean first: a soft cloth with an approved, non-abrasive cleaner (isopropyl alcohol is commonly recommended) wiped gently over the grille-mounted sensor cover, avoiding anything abrasive that could damage the cover's coating.

Worth knowing if you've had any front-end work done: a grille replacement, front bumper repair, or even a minor parking knock can throw the radar sensor's alignment out — even a fraction of a degree matters, since the sensor needs to be aimed within roughly one degree of accuracy to work correctly. Any fault message referencing "sensor misaligned" or "calibration required" after this kind of work isn't something a DIY fix can properly resolve; genuine recalibration requires dealer-level diagnostic equipment, and continuing to drive with an unresolved calibration warning means the safety system may not be working as intended.
