Toyota Corolla Alternator: Why the Hybrid Doesn't Actually Have One
If you've searched for a Corolla alternator, there's something more important to know first: the hybrid version — which is what the UK market sells almost exclusively — doesn't use a traditional alternator at all.

No Alternator, No Starter Motor — a DC-DC Converter Does Both Jobs
In a conventional petrol or diesel car, a belt-driven alternator charges the 12V battery whenever the engine runs. Hybrid Corollas work completely differently: a DC-DC converter, built into the hybrid inverter assembly, steps down power from the high-voltage hybrid battery to keep the 12V system topped up — with no belt, pulley, or engine-driven charging involved at all. This is genuinely important to understand before ordering any part, since a like-for-like "alternator" replacement simply doesn't exist for this car.
How the System Actually Works
Whenever the car is in "READY" mode, the DC-DC converter draws power from the hybrid battery pack and regulates it down to roughly 13.8–14.4V to charge the 12V battery and run the car's electronics — regardless of whether the petrol engine happens to be running at that moment. The petrol engine only starts when the hybrid battery itself needs topping up, not to directly charge the 12V system. This is also why a Corolla Hybrid can't be jump-started or push-started in the traditional sense; the 12V battery is needed just to "wake up" the hybrid system in the first place.
