Attempting to "drive it out" at this stage is often genuinely futile — the fault causing the light needs diagnosing and fixing before regeneration can succeed.

A genuinely specific, real diagnostic account worth knowing about EGR faults: a documented case involving sudden power loss on a hill, black smoke, and a muffled engine note was traced to carbon buildup restricting the EGR valve's movement. The ECU on these engines commonly monitors EGR valve position indirectly via the airflow meter reading — meaning a fault code referencing the airflow meter can sometimes actually point toward a genuine EGR problem.

It's also worth knowing that a recurring EGR-related fault code that returns despite cleaning points toward the valve needing replacement rather than further cleaning.
