Before assuming the fuel pump itself has failed, it's worth trying a simple, genuinely useful check: with the ignition turned to "on" but the engine not yet started, you should hear a faint 2-3 second hum from the rear of the car as the pump primes the fuel system. If you hear nothing at all, check the fuel pump fuse first — commonly fuse F56 in the passenger cabin fuse box on many Ford models, though always confirm your specific car's fuse layout — before assuming the pump itself needs replacing. A blown fuse is a considerably cheaper fix, and it's a genuinely common cause that gets overlooked in favour of jumping straight to pump replacement.

General wear symptoms worth knowing: engine sputtering or hesitation under acceleration, a longer-than-usual crank before starting, a noticeable whining or buzzing noise from the rear of the car near the fuel tank, and stalling at low speeds or idle are the classic signs of a genuinely failing pump rather than a blown fuse or other simpler fault.
