A Genuine, Specific Fault: Cracked Plastic Fuel Pump Housing on 2014 Models — Ford Focus Mk3 Fuel Pump

Some 2014-build Focus models had a documented manufacturing defect where the plastic housing of the in-tank fuel pump assembly could crack, leading to low fuel pressure and stalling. If you're looking at a Focus from this specific build year showing intermittent stalling or hesitation under acceleration, this is worth checking for specifically before assuming a more general fault. Beyond this specific issue, general fuel pump wear symptoms include engine sputtering or hesitation under acceleration, a longer-than-usual crank before starting, a noticeable whining or buzzing noise from the rear of the car near the fuel tank, and stalling at low speeds or idle — a check engine light showing code P0087 (fuel rail pressure too low) is a common diagnostic trigger for any of these underlying causes.

A genuinely useful diagnostic step: with the ignition turned to "on" but the engine not yet started, you should hear a faint 2-3 second hum from the rear of the car as the pump primes the fuel system. If you hear nothing at all, check the fuel pump fuse first (commonly fuse F56 in the passenger cabin fuse box) before assuming the pump itself has failed — a blown fuse is a much cheaper fix.

On 2.0-litre direct-injection Focus models specifically, there are genuinely two separate fuel pumps working together: a low-pressure pump inside the tank, and a separate high-pressure pump mounted on the engine. A P0087 code can be triggered by either one failing — if the low-pressure in-tank pump is struggling, it starves the high-pressure pump of adequate supply, producing the same fault code as a genuine high-pressure pump failure. A scan tool showing actual versus desired fuel rail pressure, with low pressure specifically at idle, points toward the in-tank pump as the more likely cause.

What It Does

The fuel pump draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to the engine at the pressure required for proper combustion. Almost all modern versions sit inside the fuel tank itself, submerged in fuel, which is partly why access for replacement is more involved than the part's small size might suggest.
