Ford S-Max Timing Belt: Intervals, Fitment & Warning Signs

Like the Galaxy, the S-Max's main engines avoid the wet belt risk seen elsewhere in Ford's range — but the 2.0 EcoBoost brings its own timing chain wear pattern.

OEM Part Number: 1787857

Genuinely distinctive to know: the 1.6/2.0 TDCi diesel (DV6/DW10 engine family) was jointly developed with PSA (Citroen/Peugeot), and this exact timing belt kit is the same part sold under Citroen and Peugeot badges — the identical reference covers this Ford alongside the Citroen C4/C5 and Peugeot 308/508 of the same engine generation.

Confirmed: The S-Max's Main Engines Sidestep the 1.0 EcoBoost "Wet Belt" Risk — Ford S-Max Timing Belt

Like its Galaxy sibling, the S-Max has mainly been sold with the larger 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines, or with a diesel — so the wet timing belt considerations covered on our smaller Ford models generally don't apply here. Always confirm your exact engine via your VIN rather than assuming, but for the large majority of S-Max models this specific concern isn't relevant.

A separate, genuine concern on the 2.0 EcoBoost specifically: this larger engine has a documented tendency toward intake valve carbon build-up (a known characteristic of direct-injection engines generally) and timing chain tensioner wear, particularly on cars used mainly for shorter journeys. A cold-start rattle or gradually rougher idle is worth having checked rather than dismissed as normal turbo-petrol character.
