Why "Interference" Engines Change Everything
Not every engine has the same amount at stake if a timing belt fails, and understanding the distinction is worth two minutes of your time. In an interference engine, the pistons and valves occupy overlapping physical space at different points in the combustion cycle — timing kept them apart, and nothing else does. If the belt snaps and that timing is lost, the pistons collide directly with open valves, typically bending valves, damaging pistons, and sometimes cracking the cylinder head — the kind of failure that can total an otherwise good car. In a non-interference engine, there's enough physical clearance built in that a snapped belt simply stalls the engine — a stranding inconvenience requiring a tow and a belt replacement, but no internal carnage. Most modern engines are interference designs, which is precisely why manufacturers treat this interval as a hard limit rather than a loose suggestion.
Typical Intervals, and Why "Severe" Driving Shortens Them
Most belt-driven engines call for replacement somewhere between 60,000 and 120,000 miles, or a time-based interval — commonly five to seven years — whichever comes first, since the rubber degrades with age and heat cycling regardless of how far the car has actually driven. What counts as "severe" driving genuinely matters here: frequent short trips, heavy stop-and-go traffic, extreme heat, towing, or dusty and humid conditions can cut the safe interval by 30–50% compared with the manufacturer's baseline figure, because repeated cold starts followed by rapid warm-ups age rubber faster than steady motorway driving does. A belt can also look completely fine on a visual inspection — no visible cracking or fraying — while already critically weakened internally, so don't let a belt that "looks okay" talk you into pushing past the recommended interval.
If you've bought a used car with no documented timing belt history, treat that as a strong reason to have it done regardless of indicated mileage, rather than gambling on the previous owner's maintenance habits.
Never Replace Just the Belt on Its Own
The tensioner and idler pulleys that keep the belt correctly tensioned wear at a similar rate to the belt itself, and a failing tensioner can destroy a brand-new belt within minutes of it being fitted — a real, well-documented failure mode, not a theoretical one. On many engines the water pump is also driven directly by the timing belt, and since accessing the belt already requires stripping down the front of the engine, replacing the water pump at the same time is standard practice — doing the job twice to save a currently-healthy water pump rarely makes financial sense once you account for the labour involved. Reputable kits bundle the belt, tensioner, idler, and water pump together specifically to avoid this exact false economy.
Which Aftermarket Brands Actually Matter Here
This is one of the few parts on this site where the aftermarket brand genuinely is worth being selective about, given the consequences of a failure. Gates, Dayco, Continental (also sold as ContiTech or Conti), INA, and Aisin are all established original-equipment suppliers — meaning the "aftermarket" belt in one of their boxes may be functionally identical to what left the factory, sometimes down to the same manufacturing line. Experienced independent mechanics and enthusiast forums consistently rate these five as trustworthy for this specific job; opinions differ mildly between them (some report Dayco belts as noticeably stiffer and harder to install on tightly-packaged engines, while Gates is frequently cited as the default recommendation), but the real risk in practice tends to concentrate in cheaper unbranded tensioners and idler pulleys bundled into budget kits, rather than the belt material itself. On an interference engine specifically, most specialists recommend staying with OEM or one of these established names for every component in the kit — this is not the job to economise on with an unfamiliar budget brand.
