What's Actually Built Into a Modern Bumper

A modern front bumper is a genuine three-layer assembly, not a single moulded piece. The visible bumper cover is a flexible thermoplastic shell designed to bend under minor impact rather than crack. Behind it sits an energy absorber — foam or honeycomb plastic engineered to permanently deform and soak up impact energy, protecting both the car and any pedestrian involved in a low-speed collision. Behind that is a metal reinforcement bar tied into the car's crash structure. On top of this physical structure, the front bumper on most cars built in the last decade also houses genuine electronics: parking sensors, the radar module for adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, and sometimes camera housings for surround-view systems — all wired, precisely positioned, and calibrated from the factory.

Why a "Simple" Crack Isn't Always Simple to Fix

Whether damage can be repaired or needs full replacement depends on more than just size. As a rough guide, damage smaller than your hand, without deep cracking, and away from the mounting points and tabs, is generally repairable — plastic welding and refinishing can restore it convincingly. But cracks radiating from a mounting point, torn plastic, or a bumper that's come loose from its clips are all reasons replacement is the safer and often ultimately cheaper option, since a bumper that isn't securely fixed can vibrate loose at speed. Critically, if your car has sensors built into the bumper, many manufacturers explicitly prohibit filling or patching damage anywhere near the sensor zones — a layer of body filler or thick paint can physically block the radar or ultrasonic signal the sensor relies on, even if the repair looks cosmetically perfect afterward.

Why Sensor-Equipped Bumpers Trigger a Recalibration Bill

If your bumper houses parking sensors, radar, or cameras, removing or replacing the cover is a recognised trigger for mandatory recalibration — not an optional upsell. These systems are calibrated to a precise factory position, and a bumper refitted even slightly off-centre can point a radar sensor a degree or two off its intended aim, which is enough to cause phantom emergency braking or, worse, a genuine failure to detect a real hazard. Expect recalibration to add a meaningful amount to the bill on top of the physical repair — commonly cited industry ranges are roughly £150–£300 per parking sensor, £300–£600 for a radar module, and £200–£400 for a camera, though this varies by manufacturer and system. If a shop tells you calibration is required after bumper work on a car with these features, that's a legitimate, often manufacturer-mandated step, not a way of padding the invoice.

OEM vs Aftermarket: Where the Real Risk Sits

Aftermarket bumper covers typically cost 30–60% less than genuine OEM parts, and for an older car without any sensor integration, a quality aftermarket cover is often a perfectly reasonable choice. The genuine risk with cheaper aftermarket covers on a sensor-equipped car is fitment precision — even a small deviation in mounting position or panel gap can throw off a sensor's aim in a way that's not visually obvious but genuinely affects how the system reads the road. For any car with radar-based driver assistance, most specialists recommend OEM or a very well-regarded aftermarket brand specifically to avoid this risk, reserving budget aftermarket parts for older, sensor-free cars where fit precision to the millimetre simply doesn't matter in the same way.
