The CVT Gearbox Is Genuinely the Most Important Thing to Research First

If there's one issue worth understanding before buying any Nissan fitted with a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic — and that spans the Juke, Qashqai, X-Trail, and Note across multiple generations — it's this: Nissan's CVT gearboxes have a well-documented, widespread reputation for premature failure, and this isn't a rare or overstated complaint. Symptoms include jerky acceleration, shuddering, a high-pitched whining noise, and in a genuinely significant number of reported cases, complete transmission failure well before 50,000 miles — often traced back to internal bearing wear. Unlike many gearbox faults, a full CVT failure frequently isn't economically repairable at all; the usual remedy is a complete transmission replacement, which can run to thousands of pounds if the car is out of warranty. This pattern has been serious enough that one recent reliability survey placed the first-generation Nissan Juke dead last — 38th out of 38 cars — in its entire class, with Nissan as a brand placing 29th out of 30 manufacturers in the same survey.

It's worth being clear that this doesn't mean every CVT-equipped Nissan will fail — many owners report years of trouble-free use — but given how serious and expensive the failure mode is when it does occur, a used CVT-equipped Nissan is genuinely worth extra scrutiny: a full test drive checking for any shuddering, hesitation, or unusual noise under acceleration, and ideally a transmission fluid service history, since regular fluid changes are one of the few things that measurably reduces the risk. Manual gearbox versions, and Nissan's newer 7-speed DCT (a genuinely different design from the CVT, fitted to some later Qashqai variants) don't carry this same specific reputation.

1.2-Litre DIG-T Petrol Engines Bring Their Own Separate Timing Chain Concern

Separately from the gearbox, the 1.2-litre DIG-T turbocharged petrol engine — used across the Qashqai, Juke, and Pulsar — has its own documented history of timing chain stretch, showing up as a rattling noise on cold start that gets progressively worse and can lead to poor performance or, left unaddressed, serious engine damage. This is a genuinely separate issue from the CVT gearbox problem, and it's entirely possible for a car to have one issue without the other — but both are worth checking independently on any car fitted with this specific engine.

Diesel and Turbo Petrol Models Share Common Turbocharger Concerns

Turbocharger wear is a frequently reported issue across both petrol and diesel Nissan engines, generally linked to oil contamination or infrequent oil changes affecting the turbo's bearings and seals — symptoms include a whining or whistling noise, a genuine loss of power, and in advanced cases visible smoke from the exhaust. Regular oil changes with the correct specification oil are the single most effective preventive measure. Diesel models bring the usual DPF (diesel particulate filter) considerations common to most modern diesels — a filter that needs sustained higher-speed driving to regenerate properly, and one that's at real risk of blockage on cars used mainly for short urban journeys.

Not All Bad News — Later Generations Show Genuine Improvement

It's worth balancing the above with a fairer picture: second-generation Jukes (2019 onwards) and more recent Qashqai generations have seen meaningfully improved build quality and gearbox reliability compared with their predecessors, and Nissan's co-developed engines (some Qashqai units are developed jointly with Mercedes-Benz) have generally avoided the worst of the older CVT-related issues. If reliability is a priority, prioritising a newer generation with full service history — and being especially thorough checking the transmission on any older CVT-equipped example — is the sensible approach.
