Two Fundamentally Different Rear Axle Designs, and Why It Matters
Most front-wheel-drive family cars use one of two rear axle designs, and knowing which your car has explains a lot about how the shock absorbers are mounted and what actually needs replacing. A torsion beam (also called a twist beam) is a single, large H- or U-shaped stamped steel section — the shock absorbers mount near the outer ends of this beam, and there are no separate serviceable arms to consider. A multi-link setup uses several separate arms per wheel, with the shock absorber typically mounted independently of the load-bearing spring — this "de-coupled" spring-and-damper arrangement is common on multi-link rear axles and means the shock absorber itself is a comparatively simple, self-contained part to identify and replace, even though the surrounding arms are more numerous.
How to Tell Which One Your Car Has
The simplest way is visual: look underneath the rear bumper — a single, thick, solid beam running the full width of the car is a torsion beam; several separate arms and linkages means multi-link. On many VW Group cars specifically, the vehicle's PR-code sticker (usually in the service manual or spare wheel well) confirms it directly — code 0N1 for torsion beam, 0N4 for multi-link. Four-wheel-drive versions of a given car almost always require multi-link regardless of what the front-wheel-drive version uses, since a torsion beam doesn't leave room for a rear differential and driveshaft to pass through.
What Actually Wears, and the Warning Signs
A worn rear shock absorber fails the same way any shock does: developing oil leaks (visible as a wet or oily film on the shock body), losing damping efficiency, and eventually failing to control body movement properly — at which point the car feels bouncier over bumps and takes longer to settle afterward. A simple bounce test at each rear corner (push down firmly and release) is a genuinely useful first check: a healthy shock settles within one bounce, while a worn one continues bouncing two or three times. Self-levelling or adaptive/electronically-controlled rear shocks (common on higher trims and larger cars) are a genuinely different, more expensive part from a standard passive shock, and the two are not interchangeable.
Confirming Fitment Before You Buy
Rear shock absorbers differ between body styles and trims of the same car, with sportier trims typically using stiffer damping than standard versions, and self-levelling or adaptive variants being a completely different part again. Left and right are usually separate, non-mirror-image references too. Always confirm the exact parts fitted to your specific trim before ordering, and check compatibility against your registration or VIN before buying.
DIY Difficulty and Aftermarket Advice
Rear shock absorber replacement is a moderate DIY job on most cars — considerably more straightforward than a front strut, since the coil spring is usually mounted separately rather than compressed around the shock body. Expect roughly an hour per side on a straightforward multi-link or torsion-beam design, or a garage visit for self-levelling or adaptive-damping systems given the extra electronics involved.
