Two Fundamentally Different Rear Axle Designs, and Why It Matters

A torsion beam rear axle carries the spring directly on the beam itself, with a fairly simple, standardised spring seat. A multi-link setup often mounts the spring separately from the shock absorber (a "de-coupled" arrangement), which means the spring is a distinct, independently replaceable part rather than bundled with the damper — genuinely useful to know if only the spring, not the shock, has actually failed.

Corrosion Is a Genuine, Common Issue — But Rarely the Direct Cause of Snapping

Rear coil springs are among the most exposed steel components on the car, and visible surface corrosion is extremely common, especially on older cars in the UK's wet, salted-road climate. It's worth knowing that corrosion alone rarely causes a spring to snap outright — most snapped springs fail at the coil's tail end due to metal fatigue and stress concentration, and this can happen with or without visible corrosion nearby. That said, corrosion is a genuine, real MOT advisory item (test category covering corroded coil springs), and a heavily pitted or flaking spring is reasonably treated as a sign of age worth planning around, even if it isn't an automatic failure on its own — a spring that's actually cracked or fractured is a distinct, more serious MOT fail category.

What Actually Wears, and the Warning Signs

Beyond a visible corrosion advisory, look for uneven ride height (one rear corner sitting noticeably lower), a clunk or knock over bumps that a shock-absorber bounce test doesn't explain, or a twanging/rattling noise on tighter turns. Springs can also sag gradually with age even without a dramatic failure, lowering rear ride height and subtly affecting handling and headlight aim.

Confirming Fitment Before You Buy

Rear spring rates differ between body styles and trims of the same car — an estate or higher-load variant typically uses a stiffer spring than the equivalent hatchback or saloon, and self-levelling or air-suspension-equipped cars use a completely different rear spring arrangement (or no conventional coil spring at all). Always confirm the exact spring fitted to your specific trim and body style before ordering, and replace in pairs — a single new spring paired with an old, sagged one on the other side creates an uneven ride height and handling bias.

DIY Difficulty and Aftermarket Advice

Rear spring replacement typically needs a spring compressor and carries a real safety risk if done incorrectly, given the stored energy in a compressed coil spring. Expect a garage visit unless you're already confident and properly equipped for this specific job.

Reputable aftermarket springs from established brands are widely regarded as safe, reliable alternatives to OEM parts. Given how directly ride height and handling are affected, it's worth avoiding unbranded budget parts and confirming the correct spring rate for your exact trim rather than assuming one size fits all.
