The 2.0 Ingenium Timing Chain Issue: Genuinely the Most Important Thing to Know

The engine uses two internal timing chains that are designed to last the vehicle's life, but a well-documented pattern of premature stretch has emerged, with typical chain life reported as low as 80,000-120,000km on affected examples — considerably short of "lifetime." The first warning sign is a metallic rattle specifically on cold start, fading as the engine warms and oil pressure builds; left unaddressed, the stretched chain eventually slips or jumps timing entirely, at which point pistons strike the valves directly, causing catastrophic internal engine damage that's rarely economical to repair.

This is worth taking genuinely seriously: one documented owner account describes a 2018 Evoque, fully serviced at an approved dealership throughout, suffering complete chain failure at just 38,000 miles — with a full engine replacement quoted in excess of £13,000. Critically, specialists confirm this issue is not currently subject to any manufacturer recall, meaning the cost falls entirely on the owner unless the car is still within its original warranty period. If you're looking at a used Ingenium-engined Land Rover, a cold-start test specifically listening for this rattle is essential — record it on your phone if you hear anything unusual, since this is genuinely useful evidence for a specialist to review. Air Suspension and Electronic Parking Brakes Are Recurring, Model-Specific Weak Points

On Discovery models specifically, the electronic air suspension system is a well-documented weak point, with failures — uneven ride height, compressor faults, or the car settling to its lowest position and refusing to rise — becoming common in the 60,000-100,000km range. Regular inspection of air lines and the compressor helps catch problems before they escalate to a full system failure. Separately, the electronic parking brake fitted across several models has its own documented unreliability, with spontaneous engagement or failure to release reported from as little as 50,000km — in some cases the system won't operate at all if the 12V battery is running low, a detail worth being aware of given how inconvenient (and potentially unsafe) this can be if it happens while trying to park.
