Before Chasing an Expensive Fault, Check the Battery First

This is genuinely worth knowing and is more specific than a generic "electrical gremlins" reputation: Renault's electronic systems are documented as unusually sensitive to supply voltage, with comparatively high current demands across the network of control modules. In practice, this means a battery that's merely getting tired — not yet dead, just below full health — can produce a cascade of seemingly unrelated symptoms: spurious dashboard warnings, an automatic gearbox that suddenly won't select Drive or Reverse, erratic sensor readings, or an EDC dual-clutch transmission that appears to have failed electronically. Owners have reported gearbox fault warnings and a complete loss of drive that resolved entirely once a fresh, fully-charged battery was fitted — the underlying transmission hardware was never actually at fault. Before paying for gearbox or module diagnostics on a Renault showing multiple, hard-to-pin-down electrical symptoms, having the battery properly load-tested (not just checked for a basic voltage reading) is a genuinely worthwhile, low-cost first step.

The EDC Automatic Gearbox: Mechanically Sound, But Sensitive

Renault's EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) automatic transmission, fitted across Clio, Captur, and Megane among others, is generally regarded by specialists as a mechanically robust design in its own right — the two internal clutches themselves are not typically the weak point. Its documented vulnerabilities are more specific: external electrical connectors that corrode over time (particularly on older or high-mileage cars), and the transmission's control software, which Renault has revised more than once via updates to better compensate for individual driving style and normal clutch wear. Combined with the voltage sensitivity noted above, this means an EDC-equipped Renault showing jerky changes, hesitation, or warning lights is genuinely worth having properly diagnosed — checking battery health, electrical connections, and software version — before assuming a full transmission rebuild is required.

The 1.2 TCe Petrol Engine: One Genuine Weak Point Worth Knowing

The 1.2-litre TCe turbo petrol engine, used across the Captur, Clio, and Kadjar among others, has a documented tendency toward higher-than-expected oil consumption on some examples, particularly pre-2018 cars — worth monitoring proactively with more frequent oil level checks between services, since this is generally manageable if caught early rather than allowed to run genuinely low. Separately, the widely-shared 1.5 dCi diesel engine (also found across many Nissan and Dacia models given Renault-Nissan's shared engineering) has a broadly solid reputation as one of the more dependable small diesels on the market, though early injector wear and turbocharger issues have been reported on higher-mileage examples.

Reliability Has Genuinely Improved With Each Generation

It's worth setting expectations by generation rather than assuming a fixed brand reputation: independent claims-based reliability data consistently shows newer Renaults — the current Clio and Megane in particular — scoring well above older equivalents, with the Megane specifically noted as having improved enough in recent years to score well above class average. Older, higher-mileage examples are more likely to show the electrical and suspension wear patterns described above simply through age and accumulated use, rather than these being inherent flaws that affect every Renault regardless of condition.
